Interpretive Research
Interpretive images are one of the ways we bring missing, overlooked or partially documented moments back into view. This Interpretive Research matters because it helps ensure that what we create is not arbitrary illustration, but a disciplined act of historical interpretation grounded as firmly as possible in the available evidence. Within the parameters of the program, the goal is not to claim impossible certainty, but to make each image more accurate, more plausible, and more meaningful, so viewers encounter a scene that feels both vivid and responsible.
The examples shown here are preliminary working interpretations and remain actively under development. As the research continues, details may be refined, corrected, or adjusted to better align with the strongest available evidence. This is an intentional part of the process. Each image is treated as a developing historical interpretation, shaped through ongoing review of sources, context, material details, and visual plausibility, with the aim of making every scene as accurate, responsible, and meaningful as possible.
B&O Passes C&O
This interpretive image was a composite of several different photographs that needed repair and reinterpretation The main source of inspiration was severely damaged. Though better, it still has some problems, but it is a major improvement over its parts and represents something that basically didn't exist before.

Locomotive Lift
